Dino Camp Comes to an End at the New Berlin Library<\/strong><\/p>\n

The New Berlin Library recently wrapped up a three-week summer children\u2019s program featuring dinosaurs, prehistoric creatures, science experiments, art, and plenty of hands-on activities.<\/p>\n

Dino Camp was held in the New Berlin Library Community Room from July 27 through August 13, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The free program was funded through a Community Foundation of South Central New York grant and a donation from the New Berlin Art Forum.<\/p>\n

The program was designed primarily for children ages 12 and younger, but was also open to children ages 18 and younger who felt they could benefit from the activities. The library requires that children age 5 and younger be accompanied by an adult for all programming.<\/p>\n

The Unadilla Valley Central School District Summer Feeding Program also operated concurrently with the library\u2019s dinosaur-themed summer program. Breakfast and lunch were balanced USDA meals, with breakfast served from 9 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch served from noon to 12:30 p.m. The feeding program was open to all children age 18 and younger, and participation in Dino Camp was not required to receive a free breakfast or lunch.<\/p>\n

Each day began at 9 a.m. with breakfast provided through the summer feeding program. From 9:30 a.m. until noon, children participated in dinosaur-themed activities planned by the library. Activities included prehistoric-inspired art, science experiments, games, and educational projects.<\/p>\n

During the second and third weeks of camp, children made amber-colored slime filled with bugs, cracked open real geodes, created air-dry clay dinosaur crafts, conducted volcano experiments, made yarn woolly mammoths, learned about fossilized shark teeth, created fake snow, made light-up torches, and many other activities.<\/p>\n

Participants also created dinosaur binders throughout the program, which they were able to take home at the conclusion of camp. The binders were filled with activities, and information sheets about dinosaurs and prehistoric life.<\/p>\n

The program concluded each day with lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe library staff is tired but very pleased with how the summer program went this year. It was our most ambitious summer program to date,\u201d said library director Michelle Priola. \u201cWe made so much dinosaur-themed art and completed lots of cool experiments.  We want to thank Community Foundation of South Central NY and The New Berlin Art Forum for their financial support and Jillian Brower and Kathleen Pizzuto for volunteering to help daily.\u201d<\/p>\n

In total, 40 children attended Dino Camp, with attendance varying from day to day. The program averaged between 12 and 16 children each day, with the busiest day drawing 22 participants.<\/p>\n

The successful summer program gave local children an opportunity to learn, create, experiment, and have fun while exploring the prehistoric world of dinosaurs.<\/p>\n
