Lost and Abandoned Property Policy
The purpose of this policy is to set library protocol for handling lost and abandoned property.
This policy provides direction to employees for the proper safeguards and disposal of items found by New Berlin Library employees.
Policy: Library visitors shall not leave personal property unattended in the library. Library staff will use discretion as to removal and/or storage of personal property left unattended for more 30 minutes.
Lost or abandoned items are found on library property. Lost or abandoned property include, but are not limited to:
- Lost property – property belonging to another person, such as clothing, keys, identification cards, books, etc.
- Abandoned property – property left behind or discarded by a person, such as clothing, books, office supplies, household items, etc.
- Unwanted or unsolicited donations will be considered abandoned property.
Procedures: Lost or abandoned property found in and around the library will be managed by the library staff.
- Identifiable items such as cell phones, keys, wallets, etc. will be attempted to be identified and returned to the owner or turned over to local police.
- All other items, such as household items, backpacks, personal care items, clothing, etc. will be held until the end of the business day and then discarded.
- Item can be held longer at the request of the owner but will not be held longer than 7 days.
