Grant Awarded to the New Berlin Library
The New Berlin Library was awarded a Community Foundation for South Central New York Library Grant. This grant was for written by the library director, Michelle Priola, for the creation of a Young Adult Area at the New Berlin Library.
The library wanted to create a teen friendly space in the library where young adults can interact in a safe and non-commercial setting. We felt that this space was especially needed due to the recent closure of the New Berlin Youth Center. The New Berlin Library serves a mostly rural community with limited options for social interaction, especially for teens and young adults. The library hopes this space will fulfill that need.
The grant was used to purchase a sofa, chairs, side tables with charging ports, and art work to transform the Young Adult book section of the library into a comfortable, safe, and friendly place for young people to congregate without any pressure to spend money or risk of loitering. The space continues to house the library’s Young Adult book collection, but the antiques other items were relocated to make room for the new furniture.
