Free Concert

On Saturday, November 17th, from 10:30 a.m. till noon, the Smyrna Public Library will hold a free concert to which the public is warmly invited.  The Blue Parsley Boys, a local, all-male a capella group, are returning in honor of our anniversary; their first concert here two years ago was extremely well received.  There will be an opening act by Library Director Clara Lantz, who will be accompanied on keyboard by the award-winning Dianne Adams McDowell; the style is Classic Country.  Clara’s husband is a member of the Blue Parsley Boys, and he will be joining her on a few of her songs.  Refreshments will be provided; it is rumored there will be cake.

Banned Books Week

The American Library Association (ALA) calls out censorship with Banned Books Week 2018.  This annual celebration of the freedom to read takes place this year September 23-29, with the theme “Banning Books Silences Stories.”  At this library, on Saturday, September 29th, I will be presenting a program from 10:30 a.m. till noon.  I would be happy to welcome assistance in reading aloud from banned books; no advance preparation is required, but feel free to bring your own material.  My selections will be taken from the newest list compiled by the ALA (2017), as well as some perennial classics.  The program will begin with an explanation of how books are challenged and banned.

Healthy Home-Cooking Class

On Thursday, September 20th, 4:00-5:30 p.m., Liz Coffey will return with another Healthy Home-Cooking Class, courtesy of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County and Eat Smart New York.  This is a real treat.  You can watch Ms. Coffey prepare a recipe and sample it, too!  She always has instructional handouts for participants to take home, as well.
