An event for all ages: Wednesday, January 29, is National Puzzle Day, and the Smyrna Public Library invites you to come from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to put together or to solve a variety of types of puzzles. There will be jigsaw puzzles, crossword and word search puzzles, and Sudoku available. If you prefer a different sort of activity to puzzles, we have board games and card games and coloring. We will have refreshments, and children can go home with free books courtesy of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Bring the whole family!
Schools, libraries, museums, and other organizations help bring Jumpstart’s Read for the Record alive in communities around the world. Read for the Record is an opportunity to rally your library and the Smyrna community around the importance of high-quality early learning experiences. The best part about Read for the Record is that everyone is invited to join in! On Thursday, November 7, at 4 p.m. we will be reading aloud, engaging in some fun activities, and enjoying refreshments. This year the official campaign book is Thank You, Omu! by Oge Mora. It is a Caldecott Honor Book, and Oge Mora is the winner of the Coretta Scott King / John Steptoe New Talent Illustrator Award. Our library’s copy came through our subscription to the Junior Library Guild and can be checked out after the program.
Four County Library System Digital Services Librarian Brian D. Lee will present a program on genealogy at our library on Tuesday, October 22, at 4:30 p.m. He will focus on: the library edition of ancestry.org; FamilySearch.org; HathiTrust, a database of millions of digitized books, including some of local interest; and NYS Historic Newspapers, a digitized collection of New York State newspapers provided by the Empire Library Network. He will also discuss DNA results and what to do with them.
