New Books for Children

Our library has just received a gift of 100 new children’s books, ranging from pre-kindergarten through early readers.  These books were a donation from the Brownstone Book Fund, a private foundation in New York City interested in fostering early reading and a love of books, and encouraging parents and children to read together.  Come to the library to explore and enjoy our new collection.

New Coloring Sheets

The New York State Library joined other libraries around the country and the world recently in sharing coloring pages based on its holdings.  A “coloring book” was put together with images found in early 20th-Century women’s magazines from its periodicals collection, described as follows: “As these images suggest, the women reading these magazines 100 years ago were interested in many of the same things as their counterparts today, such as fashion, home and family, and crafts.  And also like today, some journals focused more on political issues of the time, such as the struggle for women’s suffrage, which was granted in NY in 1917 (though not at the national level until 1920), and World War I and related home front activities.”  These new coloring sheets have been added to our current selection of pictures to enjoy while visiting the Smyrna Public Library.
