I am looking for program ideas as well as volunteers to present them. I am happy to help in any way—please come and share your knowledge and talents. I began adding programs to the library schedule, not only for our current patrons, but in hopes of introducing this lovely place to people who have never been here before, to see how truly fortunate we all are to have it, and to encourage everyone to utilize it.
I joined the Smyrna Public Library in February and have had a wonderful (almost) year here. I have felt warmly accepted and am very grateful for the opportunity I have been given to be your librarian. I particularly wish to thank all those who provided programs this year: Hellen Davies. Braden Houston, Peter Lombardi, Nigel Seddon, and the Blue Parsley Boys. I also wish to thank Susan Weitz and Penny Davies for providing special Children’s Storytimes, and Monika Wheeler for helping me to organize the Storytime series as well as taking on the craft portion.
The Smyrna Public Library is closing today at 4:00 p.m. The Office of the Smyrna Village Clerk is also closed today.
Nigel Seddon’s talk on stamp collecting took place on November 5th, which is Guy Fawkes Day in England. Mr. Seddon gave us the history of the Gunpowder Plot and told us about how it is celebrated. He also brought in a dessert to share, one traditionally made for Guy Fawkes Day. Here is the recipe he used, adapted to make it gluten-free:
1 cup oatmeal
1 cup gluten-free baking mix
1/2 tsp xanthan gum
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp ground ginger / or grated fresh ginger
1 tsp cinnamon, ground
1/4 tsp cloves, ground
1/4 tsp allspice, ground
1/4 tsp nutmeg, ground or grated from whole nutmeg
1/2 cup butter, melted
3/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup water
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg, beaten
Mix oatmeal with water, egg, and buttermilk. Stir butter and molasses together and add. Stir in dry ingredients. Pour into baking pan. Let pan sit at room temperature 15 minutes before putting in oven. Bake until pulls away from edge of pan slightly.
There will be a meeting of the Smyrna Public Library Board of Trustees on Thursday, December 15, at 1:00 p.m.
On Saturday, December 10, at 10:30 a.m., the Blue Parsley Boys will perform a holiday concert. The “Boys” are a men’s a capella group from the Hamilton area, well-known in Central New York for their four-part harmony. They perform for audiences both large and small in a variety of venues, including the Earlville Opera House. In addition to songs of the season, they will entertain us with favorites from their repertoire of music representing several decades and musical styles. If you wonder where the group’s name comes from, they will be happy to tell you—in song, of course!
The next Children’s Storytime will be held on Friday, December 9, at 10:30 a.m., when the theme will be holidays and traditions.
