Ukrainian Folk Egg Workshop 2/27

Pysanky is a 5000 year old art form used to decorate eggshells using wax-resist. On February 27th from 1-3pm you will have the chance to learn this process. We are honored to host a pysanky workshop by award winning artist Mia Sohn. All participants will take home at least one completed egg.

Registration for this workshop is open only until February 17th – call us at 563-1200 to reserve your spot, or register online.

This workshop has a $20 fee which covers the cost of materials.

Energy Saving Workshop 1/23

Ever wonder about ways to reduce heating and energy costs in your living space? Come to the Save Energy, Save Dollars workshop on Saturday, January 23rd, 2016 from 10am – noon. Whether you rent or own, you can decrease your use of energy in areas like heating and cooling, lighting, and appliances.

This workshop is free but registration is required – email vsd22@cornell.edu, call 865-6531, or register in person at the library. The program is developed by Cornell Cooperative Extension and NYS Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA).

Chainmaille Jewelry Workshop 1/16

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your own chainmaille jewelry? Now is your chance. Nicole Hubbard will be teaching a workshop here at the Sidney Library on Saturday, January 16th 2016 from 10 – 11:30am. During this time, you will learn the basics of chainmaille and create your own box chain weave necklace.

This class has a fee of $8 to cover materials. You will need to bring two sets of jewelry pliers (description available at signup) or you can purchase them from the instructor.

Healthy Children, Healthy Families Workshops

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County will present a series of free workshops on Wednesdays from 6 – 7:30pm during January and February. They begin this Wednesday, January 6th.

Learn strategies and skills that will help you be supportive of your child’s development, including games that can help your family be active and healthy. There will be a Focus on Food segment featuring healthy meal and snack ideas for children ages 3-11 with recipes and samples. You will also receive free small kitchen tools.

Unlike our other programs, you should register for these workshops directly with CCE by calling 865-6531 or emailing vsd22@cornell.edu. These classes also count toward credit hours for daycare providers.

Zombie Makeup Workshop for Teens 7/15

Do you know a middle- or high-school student who loves zombies? We are hosting a Zombie Makeup Workshop on Wednesday July 15th 2015 at 1pm where kids and teens can learn the tricks behind movie makeup. They will get a chance to be both the makeup artist and model. We have all the supplies for this free event.

Computer Classes for May

Our free computer classes for the month of May will teach the following topics:

  • Basic Budgeting with Excel – learn the basics of Microsoft Excel including how equations work and how to format cells. Leave with a personal or family budget that will automatically recalculate totals as new information is entered. Monday 5/4 @ 4pm
  • Pinterest for Crafters, Cooks, and Teachers – Learn the basics of website Pinterest, including how to save recipes, patterns, and photos for future reference. Wednesday 5/20 @ 4pm

These classes require registration since there is limited space. Please call 563-1200, stop in to the library, or reserve your spot online by clicking here.

We also offer Open Hours, when you can get one-on-one help with your laptop, smartphone, tablet, or e-reader. You are also welcome to stop by and use our scanner or try an iPad. The dates for May and June are:

  • Wednesday 5/6, 4-6pm
  • Saturday 5/16, 2-4pm
  • Monday 6/1, 4-6pm
  • Tuesday 6/16, 4-6pm

No registration is required for Open Hours – just stop in at our Public Computing Center, in the basement of the library.

Free Calligraphy Workshop 3/15

Calligraphy, the art of hand lettering, is wonderful to learn for addressing invitations, making posters, or just for fun. Join Sidney Library’s own Joyce Neal on Sunday 3/15 from 2:00 – 3:30pm to learn the basics of calligraphy. Ms. Neal taught art for 20 years in Sidney Central School and also has experience teaching adult education classes through BOCES.

Papercutting Workshop with Local Artist 2/7

Were you impressed by the cut paper artwork of Shannon Delany and would like to learn more about it? On Saturday Feb. 7th at 10am, Ms. Delany is hosting a workshop on the papercutting process. You can learn to make a beautiful cut paper heart or Celtic knot.

Create-a-Card Workshop 3/26

Sidney Library’s own Linda Shea will teach a workshop this Wednesday, March 26th at 6:30pm where she will demonstrate techniques for making birthday cards. Each participant will go home with 5 handmade cards. For a materials fee of only $5, this workshop is definitely worthwhile.
