Science Experiments for Kids – August

As part of our summer entertainment program, the Sidney Library staff will host science experiments for school age kids. These activities use everyday household objects to learn more about science in our world. The dates and topics for August are:

Grades K-3: Tuesdays, 1:30-2:30pm

  • August 5 -Weather Science
  • August 12 – Density & Buoyancy

Grades 4-6: Wednesdays, 1:30-2:30pm

  • August 6 – Optical Illusions
  • August 13 – Forces

Kids Program – The Dirtmeister 7/24

In recognition of this year’s theme of “Fizz, Boom, Read!”, we are pleased to present Soda Bottle Science – A Delightful Deluge of Dirt Cheap Science Experiments That Go Fizz, Boom and Pop! by winning author and science celebrity Steve “The Dirtmeister” Tomecek.  Steve will be at the Sidney Library on Wednesday, July 23rd at 10:00 am. During the program, Steve will explore over a dozen different science experiments that kids can safely do at home using soda bottles, coffee cans, sandwich bags and other household items. This event is free and open to the public. Following the program, Steve will be available to meet and greet the audience and will also be available to autograph copies of some of his awesome books including his Scholastic books, Soda Bottle Science, Coffee Can Science, and Sandwich Bag Science.

Kids Program – Dan Chase & His Reptiles 7/16

On Wednesday, July 16th at 6:30pm, Dan the Snakeman will be doing a program at the Sidney Library. This program, which is free and open to families, will be a time for Dan to share information about his reptiles and children will also be able to touch some of the animals. We hope you can join us!

Kids Program with Barb Field 7/9

Families are invited to join us for a free program at the Sidney Library on Wednesday July 9th at 6:30pm Barb Field and her character Professor Womboggle join us for the program Fizz, Boom, Read! Professor Womboggle is a goofy science professor with a trunk full of wacky and hilariously funny experiments.  She will amaze and entertain you with science principles relating to everyday life with hands on experiments.

Summer Activities for Kids

There are many opportunities for kids being offered at the Sidney Library this summer. Our staff will offer:

  • hand-on science program for grades K-3 on Tuesdays
  • family entertainment on Wednesdays
  • science experiments for grades 4-6 on Wednesdays
  • movies on Thursdays

In addition, regular children’s programs like lapsit, toddler story time, and preschool story time will all continue.

Kids will also be able to join our Independent Summer Reading Program and earn a free book for every 300 minutes of reading. More information will come in future newsletters (available at the library) and on our website.

Kids Tech Program Added – Fri 6/27

There will be another Kids Tech program on Friday, June 27th from 2-3pm in the Public Computing Center (downstairs in the Sidney Library). Children ages 8-12 are invited to join us for fun on the computers, iPads, and Smartboard. We will also enjoy some games and puzzles.

There is no registration needed. We hope to see you there!

Tech Fun and Games for School Age Kids – Tues 6/10

On Tuesday, June 10th from 3:30-4:15, school age kids are invited for computer fun, games, and activities in the Sidney Library’s Public Computing Center (downstairs). No need to register, just come and have fun.

Children’s Programs This Week

In addition to our weekly children’s programs, we will have the following bi-weekly events this week:

  • PJ Story Time – Wed. March 5th at 6:30pm.
  • Music For Munchkins – Thurs. March 6th at 10:30am.

Also, Dr. Seuss‘s birthday is this week so we will be honoring him by reading The Cat in the Hat, one of his most popular stories. We hope you can join us!

Children’s Events This Week

In addition to the wonderful children’s programs already in place, there are two special events for kids this week.

  • Kids age 3-7 are invited to attend our Olympics Party, in celebration of the 22nd Winter Olympic Games. This Friday, February 21st from 10:30-11:30am in the Smart Community Room, we hope you will join us for reading, crafting, and game playing.
  • The children’s movie this month is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and will be shown this Thursday, February 20th at 1pm in the Smart Community Room. You can read more about the movie and watch its trailer by clicking here to view our original post for the event.

Children’s Movie – Rescheduled for 2/20

Children can come see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 at the Sidney Library – Rescheduled to Thursday February 20th at 1pm. This free showing of the movie will be in the Smart Community Room, and we hope you will come join us! You can watch the movie trailer below.
