Thank you so much to the voters of the Sidney Central School District, who recently voted 308-53 to approve our library budget. Because of your support, we will be able to continue to offer books and other media, children’s programs, computer classes, and much more.
In observance of Memorial Day, the Sidney Library will be closed Monday 5/25. We will resume normal business hours on Tuesday.
The Friends of the Libraries sponsor a monthly book club, which anyone is welcome to join. This month, they will be discussing The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty. The group will meet Tuesday 5/19 at 11:30am in the Smart Community Room.
Are you new to Medicare? Do you have questions about seniors’ health insurance or different prescription plans? Join us on Monday 5/11 at 2pm in the Smart Community Room to learn from Donna Martino, who is a Health Insurance Counseling & Assistance Program Coordinator. She will discuss things like supplemental insurance options, prescription coverage, and your options for Medicare benefits. Ms. Martino is a wonderful resource for those who are trying to choose the right health insurance for their situation. This program is free and open to the public.
The featured artist for the month of May is Kevin Klumpp. Mr. Klumpp has dealt with many challenges in his life, including being unable to speak and learning to communicate through sign language. He is very passionate about drawing and photography. Many of Kevin’s drawings take several days to complete and the inspiration for his work is not always known. Please stop in to the Smart Community Room and view his work any time our library is open.
Do you like perennials for their low maintenance, but want something new to add to your garden? Join us on Tuesday 5/5 at 6:30pm in the Smart Community Room as Tony Antes shares information about some unusual perennials that grow well in our planting zone. Mr. Antes is a master gardener for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County. This program is free to the public and we hope you will join us!
Our free computer classes for the month of May will teach the following topics:
- Basic Budgeting with Excel – learn the basics of Microsoft Excel including how equations work and how to format cells. Leave with a personal or family budget that will automatically recalculate totals as new information is entered. Monday 5/4 @ 4pm
- Pinterest for Crafters, Cooks, and Teachers – Learn the basics of website Pinterest, including how to save recipes, patterns, and photos for future reference. Wednesday 5/20 @ 4pm
These classes require registration since there is limited space. Please call 563-1200, stop in to the library, or reserve your spot online by clicking here.
We also offer Open Hours, when you can get one-on-one help with your laptop, smartphone, tablet, or e-reader. You are also welcome to stop by and use our scanner or try an iPad. The dates for May and June are:

No registration is required for Open Hours – just stop in at our Public Computing Center, in the basement of the library.
Are you curious about some of the flowers you see growing wild? On Tuesday 4/28 at 6:30pm, come learn more about wildflowers and how to identify them. Martin and Mary Ann Cuff of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County will share tips and help you set up an identification kit. We hope you will join us for this program, which is free to the public.
